Have you ever wanted to try Reformer Pilates but aren’t quite sure what it is or if it’s right for you?
By now, you’ve probably heard about Reformer Pilates, either from a friend or from something you’ve read. Have you done Matwork Pilates but can’t comprehend how you would do Pilates on a piece of equipment? Maybe someone you know, or even your doctor or PT, has been telling you about all the benefits of Reformer Pilates, but you just don’t quite understand it. Let’s clear up some of your questions about the Reformer!
The Pilates Reformer uses springs to provide resistance to your exercises. This spring tension allows for both strengthening and lengthening of the muscles, and is easy on your joints. This is why it is an ideal movement choice for all abilities, levels and ages. Exercises and resistance levels are customized to provide an appropriate and safe workout for each individual. The movement of the springs is a direct reflection of the movements of the body… your body, with its fluidity, precision, coordination and strength, controls the springs. This is what makes Reformer Pilates a whole-body integrated movement system.
When you first see the Pilates Reformer, you’ll notice that it uses a pulley system with ropes, straps and loops, Oh My!! It is probably nothing like any other piece of exercise equipment you’ve ever seen, and I promise it will be nothing like any piece of exercise equipment you’ve ever used. And I mean that in the best way possible. All parts of the Reformer work seamlessly together to provide the ultimate movement routine to combine strength, length, flexibility, mobility and core strength.
As I’m sure you’ve heard, Pilates is widely known for its focus on increasing core strength and stability. The Reformer is no exception. Pilates movements on the Reformer are controlled first and foremost using the core and the breath. Without the coordination of both, you’re missing out on one of the basic fundamentals of Pilates. Do you experience back pain or find that your posture is suffering due to sitting hunched over a computer all day? Reformer Pilates can help you find your core again.
Imagine a body that feels stronger, longer, flexible, and more mobile, with less pain and discomfort. Doesn’t this sound pretty amazing?! Whether you are just getting started on your wellness journey, an athlete wanting to complement your current routine, or somewhere in between, Reformer Pilates is a great fit for you.
